I like to ask a lot of questions. It’s how I learn. My last post was about asking the question, did you live well today? Today’s post is about pondering a new question, what will be obvious in retrospect?
We all have blindspots in our thinking. There are many moments of wondering why I didn’t see something until after the fact. It’s because we’re human and by our very nature imperfect. They say hindsight is 20/20, but I’d rather it’s my foresight.
I like to ask myself this question every once in a while to try and find my blindspots. This usually involves thinking about the actions I do and thoughts I have on autopilot. It’s within these almost involuntary actions and thoughts that I generally find my own blindspots. It’s the patterns of behaviour that happen almost by default.
By consciously spending some time on this I can hopefully notice the blindspots and from there do something about them.
Another outcome of asking this question is finding new opportunities. There are many inventions that seem obvious in retrospect. And someone had the vision to see the obvious before anyone else did. This is the type of vision I aspire to have.
No only do we as individual humans have blind spots, but also our collective societies and cultures as a whole. I find that these blind spots are the most challenging to see with strong group think. We pull the wool over all of our own eyes and pretend it’s not there. This is why I think it is important to think for yourself and think different.
And so I ask you, what will be obvious in retrospect?
I appreciate you.
